In the car on the way back to Seongbuk-dong, Gyeong-eun Lee turned to Seong-ho Kim, her voice full of worry.
"Do you think he really meant it?"
"I'm sure he did."
"He's really handing Ilhyeon to me?"
It was a thing she had never once considered.
She had never wanted it and never expected it.
All her attention had gone into building up the Ilhyeon Department Store and the Ilhyeon Hotel so she could pass them to her children.
And now, out of nowhere, Tak-hyeon Lee had declared that she was to take the Ilhyeon Group, and her head was swimming.
"Why me?"
"Because there's no one but you."
Gyeong-eun Lee let out a short groan and hung her head.
A normal child.
In a normal household it was such an easy, simple thing that it happened without anyone hoping for it.
But in the Ilhyeon house it was harder than anything.
And in the Ilhyeon house right now, Gyeong-eun Lee was the only one of Tak-hyeon Lee's children in a position to be called normal.
"There really isn't anyone but me."
"That's right. So at least you follow the Chairman's wishes."
Gyeong-eun Lee nodded at that.
Seong-ho Kim looked at his wife, who had made up her mind to do as Tak-hyeon Lee wanted, the weight of it all over her face.
This was all my plan.
He looked at her and kept the real answer inside his own head.
Then he smiled to himself, satisfied, and turned to look out the car window.
Chang-jong Lee, Jeong-eun Lee, Sang-jong Lee and now Mun-jong Lee — every one of them out of Tak-hyeon Lee's favor and gone from the succession.
All of it had been Seong-ho Kim's design, and every part of it had come off exactly as he'd laid it out.
