Chapter 219: The War God’s Long-Cherished Wish (Part 1)

When that six-figure damage number appeared on the War God’s Departed Spirit, Ye Tianxie doubted his own eyes as he never had before in his life.

Nobody knew Yaoyao’s attributes and every one of its abilities better than he did, as its master. So what on earth had it done… to inflict a wound that enormous on the War God’s Departed Spirit in a single instant!?

Ye Tianxie’s shock lasted a long time before it eased at all — and the white light that had flared across Yaoyao a moment ago, that was… Mystic Spirit Restoration, the skill that restores 30% of every companion’s health!

In that instant, in the middle of his shock, Ye Tianxie understood it completely.

A healing skill that restores health as a proportion of the target’s own maximum should never have existed in the first place, because an effect of that kind shakes the balance of healing badly. A healing skill like that lets a level 1 novice Priest keep a whole group of level 100 melee classes alive. And when that proportional healing skill is applied to an undead creature… the effect is entirely inverted. It erases life by proportion.

The Wall of Heaven’s Grace Yaoyao had cast was still in effect, and it increases all healing by 50% — so a 30% restoration became 45%. In a single instant, the War God’s Departed Spirit had been forcibly stripped of 45% of his health. Four hundred and fifty thousand.

Stripping 45% of a target’s health was nowhere near as effective against the Warrior’s Departed Spirits as Mystic Spirit Cure’s outright one-shot; applied to the War God’s Departed Spirit, the effect went beyond terrible into something there is no word for.

Ye Tianxie had certainly not forgotten what Yaoyao’s Mystic Spirit Restoration did. But when the War God’s Departed Spirit appeared, he simply had not thought along that line — and nobody else would have thought in that direction either, because no ordinary person would believe, or even accept, that a stripping skill working at that kind of proportion could really exist.

Yet Yaoyao’s Mystic Spirit Restoration had managed it, across a level gap of several dozen, with no roundabout conditions and nothing else required. It had simply done it, straight out.

In that moment, the War God’s Departed Spirit stopped being invincible.

Ye Tianxie stopped moving forward and turned around, a boiling fire of excitement kindling in him… The System had gone out of its way to warn that the War God’s Departed Spirit could not be defeated, and his strength had borne that warning out entirely. Which meant that what Ye Tianxie now wanted to know, with enormous urgency, was this: if he defeated this War God’s Departed Spirit today, what would happen?

Mystic Spirit Restoration covers an area ten meters around the caster, and Yaoyao could have achieved exactly the same effect by casting it without leaving the horse’s back at all. The reason it had left Ye Tianxie and closed with the War God’s Departed Spirit was to use its own body to draw his aggro — because once it had that aggro, its master could approach and attack him with no danger at all.

Four hundred and fifty thousand damage pulled the aggro of the War God’s Departed Spirit onto Yaoyao without the slightest difficulty. He closed, and the dulled golden sword in his hand came down on that small body with all the weight of a mountain range…

BANG!!

With a deafening crash, the attack landed on the layer of yellow-earth light around Yaoyao. A berserk blow from a War God is hardly a small matter — and yet under the protection of the Wall of Heaven’s Barrier Yaoyao took not the slightest damage. It did not even move; that light little body did not shift an inch under the concussive force behind the strike. It was the War God’s Departed Spirit who was pushed back a step by the recoil.

The Wall of Heaven’s Barrier not only protected Yaoyao from all damage, it blocked the force of the impact entirely. Its effect was in no way inferior to Ye Tianxie’s Soul of the Evil Dragon.

The War God’s Departed Spirit came on and attacked Yaoyao again. His aggro had originally been locked onto Ye Tianxie, and he would have hunted him without cease; Yaoyao, as Ye Tianxie’s pet, had also been marked as a target to a degree, though only a secondary one. Now, after that Mystic Spirit Restoration, it had become his first target in one stroke.

By this time Ye Tianxie had returned to stand in front of the War God’s Departed Spirit — whose attacks still fell on Yaoyao, paying no attention to Ye Tianxie’s approach at all. Undead creatures have no developed intelligence, and that is one of their fatal flaws.

The War God’s Departed Spirit, who had 53% of his health left, had been stripped of 45% of it by Mystic Spirit Restoration, and had just 8% remaining. Only 8% — but he was a level 80 Lord BOSS, and his defense was flatly beyond anything Ye Tianxie could currently break through, while level suppression made it nearly impossible for his attacks to land at all. It is no exaggeration to say that with ordinary attacks he could stand there hacking for three days and three nights and never destroy that last 8%.

“Heh… it’s over. Be released, spirit of a hero!”

The Hour of Fate rose slowly in Ye Tianxie’s hand, and on the Blood Feather at its tip a scarlet light kindled like a demon’s eye. As the Hour of Fate came down it drew a blood-colored arc behind it…

Fate’s Seven Kills — Life Sanction · Blood Reaper!

-100000!

A stripping of 10% of health that ignores level, ignores grade, and ignores every form of defense — it emptied the last of his life in an instant. Watching that health bar go entirely blank, Ye Tianxie slowly drew the Hour of Fate back and looked at what lay in front of him…

This is what is meant by the inconstancy of the world. A few seconds ago the War God’s Departed Spirit had been a terrible enemy who simply could not be defeated, and in the space of a blink the situation had reversed itself as completely as a play… The War God’s Departed Spirit, dead just like that, under his Hour of Fate.

A magnificent world is forever staging things beyond number that are strange and impossible to credit. A miracle had shown itself in front of him once again — and this time the one who had made a miracle out of something that could not be done was Yaoyao.

The War God’s Departed Spirit fell slowly. His death was not the vanishing of an ordinary Warrior’s Departed Spirit: the armor and weapons on him stayed where they were, worn and carried as before, and came down with that half-transparent body until they touched the cold ground.

Ahead of him, the three hundred-odd Warrior’s Departed Spirits still pursuing came to a complete halt — and in the moment the War God’s Departed Spirit went down, every one of their bodies scattered at once, shedding armor and weapons in a whirl that filled the air…

With the War God’s Departed Spirit destroyed, these Warrior’s Departed Spirits — who had the War God’s conviction and will for their center and their backbone — were left with no spiritual support of any kind, and perished along with him.

“Ding… You have successfully killed the Level 80 Lord BOSS, the War God’s Departed Spirit. Renown +80.”

“Ding… You have successfully killed 1,400 Warrior’s Departed Spirits.”

The death of the War God’s Departed Spirit had brought about the annihilation of the Warrior’s Departed Spirits, so all of those deaths were credited to Ye Tianxie, who had killed him.

“Ding… You have risen to level 17. HP +20, MP +20, Strength +3, Constitution +3, Agility +3, Spirit +3. You have gained 5 free attribute points.”

“Ding… You have risen to level 18…”

“Ding… You have risen to level 19…”

“Ding… You have risen to level 20…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Mystic Spirit Snow Fox’ has risen to level 14. HP +30, MP +120, Physical Attack +3, Magic Attack +6, Defense +3, Accuracy +3, Evasion +3.”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Mystic Spirit Snow Fox’ has risen to level 15…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Mystic Spirit Snow Fox’ has risen to level 16…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Mystic Spirit Snow Fox’ has risen to level 17…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Mystic Spirit Snow Fox’ has risen to level 18…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Xiaobei’ has risen to level 9. HP +100, Physical Attack +30, Defense +10, Accuracy +10, Evasion +1.”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Xiaobei’ has risen to level 10…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Xiaobei’ has risen to level 11…”

“Ding… Your pet ‘Xiaobei’ has risen to level 16…”

“Ding… You have killed the War God’s Departed Spirit and completed a task that could not be completed. A new event, ‘The War God’s Long-Cherished Wish,’ has formed automatically. You have obtained one of the seven great hidden ultimate items of the World of Fate — the Wishing Glaze.”

In that moment the prompts of the World of Fate seemed to lose control, sounding in Ye Tianxie’s ear one on top of another. The harder a quest is, the richer the payment for completing it: that is a settled law. And when an event that could not possibly have been completed is completed like a divine miracle, what comes back is on the same heaven-defying scale…

The enormous experience of a level 80 Lord BOSS took Ye Tianxie from level 16 to level 20 in one step — four levels at once. Yaoyao gained five straight levels, and Xiaobei, being lower, leapt a full eight.

What could produce a rate of leveling that insane, short of completing an event of heaven-defying grade?

And the last line the System had spoken set Ye Tianxie’s heart knocking — one of the seven great hidden ultimate items of the World of Fate. What kind of item could possibly deserve a title like that? Could it be… an item of the very highest rank in this world, of Holy Annihilation grade?

Ye Tianxie was on the point of taking out the Wishing Glaze for a look at its attributes when a sound that did not belong came from in front of him, bringing his head up sharply. Under the Eye of the Evil Dragon, at the very spot where the War God’s Departed Spirit had fallen, a blurred figure surfaced out of empty air.

Blurred as it was, Ye Tianxie recognized it at a glance. This was the departed spirit of Zhan Wugui, the War God.

Only, unlike a moment ago, the War God was no longer wearing that aged, solid armor. His armor and his weapon were as unreal as his body. And his eyes had lost that coldness and that gloom, and held instead a peace with nothing violent in it anywhere.

“Thank you, young man…” He spoke, and the voice that came out was in no way different from an ordinary human being’s. It was not an old man’s voice. In the year Zhan Wugui died, he had been no more than fifty. “May I trouble you to carry my bones, and the weapon that was at my side all my life, back to my native soil… In this life I can be released at last, and stop wandering this quiet land, where there is no longer any war or any hatred.”
