Id, ego, superego. These are psychological terms proposed by the master psychologist Freud.

Together they make up the personality.

The instincts, impulses and desires that lie in the unconscious make up the id. It is the biological face of the personality, and it follows the pleasure principle.

The ego stands between the id and the outside world, and is the psychological face of the personality. The ego's work is twofold: on the one hand it lets a person become aware of his own capacity to know; on the other it restrains and represses the id so the person can fit himself to reality. The superego is the social face of the personality, the "moralized ego," made up of conscience and the ego-ideal. The superego's force guides the ego and limits the id, and it follows the ideal principle.
