All of those words fit what Shen Cong was perceiving from the metal lump. A second round of careful sensing confirmed it further.
The object was radiating Activity outward at a sustained level — its Activity Value held at approximately 0.665H, which was nothing to dismiss. But its Talent — the Activity Source ceiling, the upper limit of what it could hold — was simply unreadable. And the Activity Value itself wasn’t stable: it was leaking. Bleeding out steadily into the surrounding air.
By Shen Cong’s established framework, the Activity Source was a bottle and Activity was the water inside it. By that analogy, this metal lump’s Activity Source was a cracked bottle. You couldn’t tell how much it should hold because it was impossible to fill — the moment you poured water in, it seeped out through the cracks.
Why does this happen?
He kept probing while his mind worked through the possibilities, building hypotheses and dismantling them one by one.
Iron people are a vehicle-human integration. Iron beasts are a vehicle-animal integration. The patterns of metal activation seem to follow three distinct paths: trees and plants, where bark and tissue undergo metallic gradation; mutants, half-beasts, and evolved creatures, where bone structure undergoes metallic gradation; and iron people and iron beasts, where the metal vehicle itself becomes activated through bond with a living host.
Outside these three paths, metal doesn’t seem to activate. If anything, bare metal since the apocalypse has been corroding faster than it should — not natural oxidation, but something driven by Activity. Which creates a contradiction: Activity both activates metal in living systems and degrades bare metal in the open.
So what’s the actual relationship between Activity and metal?
Does Activity promote metallic activation, or accelerate corrosion? Or both — and the difference is whether a living host is present?
A hypothesis began to form. Gradually, it felt like it might hold.
Activity requires a living organism to activate metal. Without a host — without the integration with biological life — the activation can’t complete or sustain itself. That’s why every instance of activated metal is either part of a living organism or bonded to one. Standalone activation shouldn’t be possible.
And yet here it is. An exception.
The lump felt like a vehicle to his perception, but wasn’t one. The key diagnostic: a vehicle’s primary-activation metal didn’t leak Activity as long as the bonded host lived. If the host died, the vehicle’s aliveness would die with it. This object was doing neither — it was leaking constantly while remaining, stubbornly, alive. Not a vehicle, not a biological system. Something in between.
His working conclusion: this was an activation event that had occurred without a living host in proximity to integrate with. The process had started — the aliveness had kindled — but without a host to bond to, it had stalled. A half-finished product. A failed metal life form.
He recorded his reasoning in the laptop’s document file, then added the questions he couldn’t yet answer.
If a single piece of metal in the open can spontaneously activate, why have only a handful of vehicles become iron-person carriers? Why do the rest just corrode?
Would an entire metal ore deposit produce a larger failed life form?
What is the fundamental relationship between Activity and metal? Why does it activate in some contexts and corrode in others?
How does metallic life arise? What is its essential nature?
What exactly did the meteor shower bring to this world?
He shook his head. No answers forthcoming. He moved to experimentation.
The experimental results were informative.
The failed metal life form responded to Activity injection the same way a vehicle would — it could store the input and use it to amalgamate surrounding metal, absorbing and incorporating scraps to grow itself. When Activity injection stopped, amalgamation stopped, and the constant leak began to dominate again — the absorption rate barely kept pace with the drain. Without artificial feeding, the failed life form couldn’t recover on its own.
It also had no self-directed awareness. Wherever it contacted metal, that section began amalgamating — no pattern, no shape, no intentionality. It was incorporation without agency.
Structural testing confirmed it shared the enhancement properties of a proper vehicle.
Most interestingly: when Shen Cong used Vajra to interfere with the failed life form’s Activity radiation frequency — not enough to amalgamate it, given the inherent repulsion between activation metals, but enough to establish a channel — he found he could push his will into it. Not deeply, not precisely, but enough to provide directional guidance.

Ten minutes of focused effort produced a Green Dragon Crescent Blade growing from the surface of the lump.
The extension was faster and more compliant than working with Vajra’s metal — probably because the failed life form’s aliveness was so much weaker. Like shaping soft clay compared to working hardened steel.
He cut the blade free from the lump and observed. As expected: separated from the source, the blade’s Activity began bleeding away, following the same pattern as sections cut from Vajra. The confirmation point was clear — the critical difference between a failed metal life form and a proper vehicle was the absence of a bonded living core. No iron person, no iron beast. Nothing to anchor it.
Does the failed metal life form have a primary-activation metal component? The question occurred to him, but answering it would require letting the Activity drain completely — killing the aliveness to see what remained underneath. He wasn’t ready to do that yet. He had more to learn from it in its current state.
He put it aside and planned two more days of study before building something with it.
Two days passed.
The Vineyard Camp was in full construction mode. The Thieving Crow raid had forced a reckoning — the Provisional Government had met, assessed the damage to the grape clusters and new flower growth, and decided the vineyard needed serious defensive infrastructure. A proper enclosure. Reinforced perimeter.
The defensive trench was widened and deepened. Stone walls were being raised. With the crow carcasses providing enough food to suspend hunting operations for the time being, the hunting teams had been folded into the construction effort.
Zhu Haifeng came to find Shen Cong.
“Boss Huang, I have a transaction proposal, if you’re open to it. We’re building stone walls around the perimeter, but stone alone won’t stop large evolved beasts. The plan is to reinforce the outer face with steel plating. That requires a significant quantity of rivets, and — we don’t have an iron person. We can’t produce them ourselves.”
The implication was clear: Shen Cong’s amalgamation and extension capabilities, applied to manufacturing. The potential of a vehicle-bond as an industrial production line had always been there.
“What are you offering in exchange?” Shen Cong said. “There’s not much left in the camp I need.”
“Actually—” Zhu Haifeng’s grin was barely contained. “Sealed ammunition. Yesterday Li Weijun led a scavenging team into the old reserve infantry third regiment training base. They cleared the ruins and found an intact munitions depot. Live stock. Including QJY-88 machine gun rounds.”
“A munitions depot.”
Shen Cong’s attention sharpened immediately.
He had pre-apocalypse location maps for various arms sources — police stations, armed police detachments — but proper military training bases were classified installations. Only someone like Li Weijun, who’d actually served in the third regiment’s reserve structure, would know where to find the depot.
“What’s the full inventory? Quantities, types, any weapons hardware? Machine guns, autocannons?”
Zhu Haifeng laid it out without hedging. “The depot itself was intact — it was a range facility, temporary storage. Some ammunition and grenades. No weapons hardware. Quantities are limited, and the grenades — old wooden-handle stick grenades, storage wasn’t airtight, more than half are unusable. The powder can be salvaged for improvised charges, but the grenades as intended weapons are mostly gone.”
As the District Chief Shen Cong had installed personally, Zhu Haifeng had no particular reason to hide information from him and was prudent enough not to try.

Handgun ammunition: DAP-92 type 5.8mm standard rounds, fifty per carton, thirty cartons to a green plastic case. Twenty cases recovered — thirty thousand rounds total. Shen Cong had already switched to the military-issue Type 92 handgun. These would be used.
Rifle ammunition: around fifty thousand rounds total, but of those, only one case of eleven hundred QBZ-95A rounds was compatible with what he carried.
Machine gun ammunition: Type 87 machine gun rounds, thirty per small box, ten boxes to a tin, two tins to a wooden crate. Total: six hundred rounds.
Shen Cong worked through it quickly. “I’ll take all the 87 rounds and all the 95A rounds. Two cases of 92 handgun ammunition. The rifle rounds you can’t use — any calibre — I’ll take those too, price to be negotiated. Same for whatever grenades are still functional. All of them.”
