"Is this office just for you?"

"Mm."

"It's huge."

Zhang Ruowei looked around with open curiosity. As group manager in the company's most important department, Zhao Ming naturally had an office fitted out with every comfort available — leather sofa, oversized fish tank, solid wood tea table, high-end massage chair on top of that. At an ordinary small company you wouldn't find any of this even in the boss's own office.

Zhao Ming smiled. "Sit wherever you like. I've got a little to get through first — it won't take long."

"Okay."

Zhang Ruowei sat down on the sofa like a good girl and didn't make another sound.

A moment later Zhao Ming's assistant, Li Miaomiao, came in from outside carrying two coffees. She set one down on Zhao Ming's desk first, then turned and handed the sweetened one to Zhang Ruowei, taking a look down at her as she did it.

Li Miaomiao was ordinary-looking, and although she was only Zhao Ming's assistant, nobody in the company was inclined to cross her.

For one reason and no other: her posting as Zhao Ming's assistant had been arranged by the boss, Zhao Wenhua, personally.

She was in fact quite plain, and her figure was unremarkable too, but her work was outstanding and she was good at reading a room. When she first joined the company she had actually applied for an administrative post. Later an important guest came to visit and she was put in charge of looking after him. She had found out a few things about him in advance, and over the course of the visit she pleased him greatly — enough that he went out of his way to praise her to Zhao Wenhua afterward. He watched her for a while after that, and when Zhao Ming's rotation ended and he took up a manager's post in the investment department, he arranged for her to become Zhao Ming's assistant.

In fact, beyond her outstanding ability and her skill at reading people, there was one more reason Zhao Wenhua had placed her beside Zhao Ming: she was plain.
