In his spare time, Shen Cong had always enjoyed books and documentaries about biology.

Some time back he'd watched a documentary on the Chengjiang Biota — research footage combined with visual reconstruction of the Cambrian Explosion, that extraordinary 20-million-year window between 542 and 530 million years ago when multicellular life diversified in an eruption of forms unlike anything before or since.

The Chengjiang Biota had posed serious challenges to Darwinian gradualism. Many biologists argued that classical evolutionary theory wasn't always sufficient. Religion had waded in as well, with various strands of creationism seizing on the apparent sudden appearance of body plans as evidence of divine intervention.

But as understanding of geology and paleontology deepened, the picture clarified. Twenty million years was not instantaneous — and the conditions of the Cambrian had been extraordinary: rising temperatures and biological resurgence, sufficient oxygen enabling ozone formation, frequent volcanism enriching ocean nutrients, phosphate deposits forming, the emergence of biological sexes for the first time. All of these converging factors had created the conditions for explosion.

The cumulative weight of evidence didn't refute Darwin — it extended him. In recognition of this, the Chinese scientific community had revised its standard translation of "evolution" on July 1st, 2019, the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Chengjiang discovery: from 进化论 — literally "theory of advancement" — to the more precise 演化论 — "theory of transformation." A subtle but meaningful distinction: evolution wasn't necessarily progress. It was change.

Since Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859, the question of where life came from had become a serious philosophical and scientific project. Over a century and a half of research had built and refined the framework. It had produced, among other things, the theory of punctuated equilibrium:

Evolution — transformation — is not always gradual. It is a process in which gradual change and sudden leaps coexist.

He'd thought of all this because of what he'd found inside the Old Pearl Mussel.
