Central Vienna, Austria. The headquarters of Rosenberg Partners stood among stone buildings that still bore the marks of the Habsburg era.
The whole nineteenth-century building had been bought outright, its exterior kept exactly as it was and its interior redone in a modern style.
Pale gray stone, arched windows and the Rosenberg crest carved above the entrance spoke of the long history of an old Austrian noble house.
Inside, though, the modern makeover had turned it into a completely different place.
Past a lobby finished in black marble lay work areas divided up with a careful mix of glass and metal.
The elevators stopped at different floors depending on each person's access clearance.
Alexander's office was at the very top of the building.
Under its beautifully high ceiling stood antique furniture brought over from the family seat. Through the wall of glass in front, he could look down on central Vienna and the spire of St Stephen's Cathedral.
On monitors covering one wall, numbers tracking the markets in London, New York, Zurich and Asia in real time never stopped moving.
The past and the present. Aristocrat and financier.
Two worlds mingled in one space and coexisted in a curious harmony.
"The man is in Korea."
Lukas said it as he laid the report on the desk.
"He went straight there without stopping anywhere else?"
"Yes. We've confirmed he flew straight home with his party."
Back from St Moritz, Alexander still hadn't gone out to his estate on the edge of Vienna.
He had come straight from the airport to headquarters to get through the reports that had piled up.
The first page held Ha Tae-ung's photo and a short profile.
"Confirmed assets?"
"They're hard to pin down. His visible investment returns in Korea alone come to 6.7 billion euros. But the money he actually has working is likely bigger than that."
"What makes you think so?"
Six point seven billion euros. The figure alone had already put Alexander on edge. That wasn't the kind of money an individual investor could make.
And there was separate money working overseas, on top…
