The Storm Sea.
The Two-Faced King surveyed the field and concluded that his intervention was unnecessary. The Revenge Domain Emperor and the Rage Domain Emperor were already being pushed back step by step by the Lion King and the Golden Crown King.
The Rage Domain Emperor was holding — his defensive retreats had less to do with inability and more to do with the Lion King’s output being the kind of thing you didn’t absorb unless you had to, combined with the Silent King watching from the side, which made splitting attention an unavoidable problem. The Revenge Domain Emperor’s situation was considerably worse. He’d taken serious damage in the stone world, and the Lion King’s accumulated assault had taken its toll — against the Golden Crown King now, at reduced capacity, he was losing ground with every exchange. His defeat was not a question of whether, only of when.
With the Silent King present, the Revenge Domain Emperor’s survival odds were poor.
Of everyone in the Storm Sea, the only one with any realistic escape probability was the Rage Domain Emperor — and even that assumed the Silent King was choosing to let him go rather than actively preventing it.
“These small fry are yours,” the Two-Faced King told the Poet, gesturing toward the Windstill national ruler’s group with the casual authority of someone assigning routine work. “Eight Generals — hold the perimeter.”
“Understood.” The Poet knew perfectly well that the Windstill national ruler and the others had already passed the point of meaningful resistance. Even released, they had nowhere to go. They weren’t staying for any practical reason — they were staying because somewhere in the space between hope and despair, they were holding onto the idea that Yue Yang might come back, might somehow have defeated the Solar King, might walk through that entrance and change everything.
A hope smaller than a grain of sand in an ocean.
And yet — while hope exists, people will not choose death. Not when they can choose waiting instead.
The Two-Faced King had no interest in sharing credit with the Lion King and the Golden Crown King. The domain emperors were their prizes. Inserting himself would create friction he didn’t need. Besides — there were three Sky Tower warriors waiting in the stone world or the spatial passage, and they were his.
They’d been fighting past the point where bodies could sustain it. The Two-Faced King understood this pattern. When you were in the fight, the pressure itself kept you upright — the mind refusing to let the body stop because stopping meant dying. But the moment the pressure lifted, the body collected everything it was owed. Those three wouldn’t be standing anymore. They’d be on the floor, barely breathing, trying to recover enough to survive the next hour.
He was looking forward to walking in and finding exactly that.
The Two-Faced King smiled in the way that lived in a specific part of his face, shouldered the black scythe, and disappeared into the spatial passage entrance with the quality of a bat slipping into shadow.
The passage was empty.
No collapsed warriors. No trail of someone who’d finally lost the fight with their own legs.
Did they escape?
He entered the stone world.
There they were — sitting before the Star Realm Stone wall, working through recovery breathing. All three of them. He exhaled, quietly relieved. They’d made it this far before going down.
He looked around. No Solar King. No Yue Yang. And the space where the half-divine body had rested — empty, the ancient rune formation beneath it still showing a faint residual shimmer.
The Solar King went in after Yue Yang.
He chased him into the Divine Codex space.
The Two-Faced King looked at the formation for a moment, absorbing this.
Of course. Even facing the Solar King, the new Prison Emperor of the Sky Tower found a way out.
It was almost admirable, if you were in the mood for that sort of thing.
Well. The large prize had removed itself from reach. What remained was the modest prize — three half-dead Sky Tower warriors who couldn’t currently fight their way past a strong breeze.
“Auwoo. Meow.”
The Two-Faced King turned.
Gray Wolf was standing behind him.
Its expression was the specific expression of a dog that has recently eaten something satisfying and is feeling very pleased about it. Underneath this expression was the damage — no intact skin to speak of, bones regularly visible, the kind of injury catalog that by any standard description should have resulted in it being somewhere horizontal and unconscious.
Instead it was here.
Making that face.
“You wretched animal,” the Two-Faced King said, with a sincerity that went past professionalism into something more personal.
“Woof!” Gray Wolf’s response was the laugh of something that understood the insult and found it validating.
In the Storm Sea, the fighting continued.
The Revenge Domain Emperor was sent flying by a strike from the Golden Crown King’s palm — a thousand meters, the impact raising a curtain of spray from the churning surface. Blood erupted from his mouth in a continuous stream. And yet his eyes, as he reached the apex of his arc, burned with something that had nothing to do with winning or losing.
“You are the person I have hated most in this life,” he said, to the Rage Domain Emperor, while still technically in the air. “I have wanted to eat your flesh while it was still warm, drink your blood daily, wear your skin at night. I have never in my existence imagined fighting beside you.” He came down. “But this is the last moment. If you have any self-awareness at all — if you’ve had any since the beginning — then go. I don’t need someone like you dying alongside me. Get out. Leave. Now.”
“You’re a child,” the Rage Domain Emperor said, heavily. “You don’t give orders to me.”
Nobody in the Storm Sea had expected this.
The assumption had been universal: the Rage Domain Emperor would leave the moment an opening presented itself. He had stayed. Multiple openings had come and gone. He had not taken any of them. He was still here, engaging the Lion King, refusing the exits.
One hesitation — maybe he was watching for the Silent King’s trap.
But the second opportunity, and the third — those had been real openings, and he’d let them pass.
The Rage Domain Emperor was not the type of person for whom other people’s survival was a priority. That was established. And yet.
Whether or not he’d consciously chosen it, the people watching were beginning to revise their understanding of him. He had caused the original tragedy. That was true. But perhaps he hadn’t been what the stories made him — not pure cruelty, not a man without a self. Perhaps someone with a narrow heart and an absolute will, who had made a terrible error from that narrowness and had been paying for it in a way that looked identical to choosing it.
A man who had killed his own wife. Killed his own daughter. Who had wanted everything perfect and had destroyed everything instead.
A wreck of a person, rather than a monster.
“You won’t last!” The Lion King roared. His grimoire opened above him. The energy column it produced reached upward until it changed the quality of the light in the Storm Sea. A golden lion shape formed in the air — not a suggestion of one, an actual image, the size of something that should not have been able to exist in the same space as everything else — and descended, compressing the Storm Sea beneath it until the churning surface went flat, the waves pressed out of existence by the sheer weight of presence. Sky-rank tier three and below went down under the force of it involuntarily. The Windstill national ruler, Blue Wolf, and the other national-ruler-tier cultivators felt their breathing become a thing they had to concentrate on.
The Lion Cloud — three elements combined, gold, fire, wind, formed into a living weapon — was not the Lion King in a larger shape. It was something that had taken the idea of a lion and expanded it beyond what lions were supposed to be. And it moved.
One paw came down on the Revenge Domain Emperor. He caught it on the Radiance God Sword, a full-power counter that held for the fraction of a second before the second wave arrived — the Lion Cloud’s mouth opening, flames pouring from its throat, the Storm Sea surface hissing and steaming as seawater became vapor, and the Revenge Domain Emperor at the center of it.
He came out looking like the wrong end of a cremation.
The Lion King drove through, a strike at the Revenge Domain Emperor’s chest with everything he had.
Blood like a pressured fountain. The Revenge Domain Emperor launched sideways — and then the Lion Cloud, reforming from fire into gold, caught him from the opposite direction, and hit him again.
He bounced off the surface. Each bounce raised spray. Each spray carried blood. The Storm Sea recorded the hits in red.
The Rage Domain Emperor arrived.
The Revenge Domain Emperor had reached what bodies reach when they’ve passed every reasonable limit. His skull was fractured, his sternum, his spine — in multiple places. Bone fragments had found their way through muscle and skin. He was bleeding from more directions than counting was useful for.
“No—” The Rage Domain Emperor dropped to his knees on the bloody surface, reaching toward the destroyed figure of the Revenge Domain Emperor. His blood-red fury, which had never once manifested as anything other than rage — ran down his face in a different form. “Don’t do this. Get up. I know you hate me. I know you want to kill me. Stand up. Come on. A proud young man like you — how can you fall down in front of an old ruin like me? You can’t even take this much? You said you were going to avenge your mother. Get up and fight me—”
The Lion King did not pause for sentiment.
Three heavy blows landed on the Rage Domain Emperor’s head in succession. He didn’t block any of them. He took them while kneeling, while trying to reach the Revenge Domain Emperor, blood running from his skull down through his eyebrows, across his eyelids, down his cheeks — mixing with whatever the other liquid was — falling onto the Storm Sea’s surface.
“Leave,” the Revenge Domain Emperor said.
It barely qualified as a voice.
“I don’t need your pity.”
And then quieter, and quieter, until there was nothing.
The Rage Domain Emperor’s hands reached forward, trying to gather what remained of the Revenge Domain Emperor. The Lion King’s foot found one of those hands and held it down. Behind him, the Golden Crown King moved into position against the Rage Domain Emperor’s back, both palms pressing inward — a concealed vibrating force that went through skin and muscle and found the internal organs, and did what vibrating force does to things it finds inside people.
The Rage Domain Emperor’s blood came from his nose and mouth simultaneously.
The Silent King stood at a distance, the Radiance Domain Emperor hanging from one hand, watching with the complete absence of expression that was apparently his permanent condition.
The Revenge Domain Emperor saw the Rage Domain Emperor like that.
He still didn’t forgive him.
He had no intention of forgiving him.
But a tear left his eye anyway, and fell into the bloody water.
Dugu Changfeng exhaled slowly. “Well. Dying in the blood and tears of family — you could do worse, Revenge. You really could.”
The Lion King raised his hands.
The Lion Cloud shifted — from gold, to wind, to the shape of something vast and open-mouthed above the Storm Sea surface, ready to close, the last thing many of them would ever process.
The Revenge Domain Emperor closed his eyes. Dugu Changfeng closed his. The Windstill national ruler, Blue Wolf, and the others — closed.
Everything had led here. All the grievances, all the hatred, all the careful maneuvering and loss. It had led here. The few seconds remaining were all that was left.
Farewell, friends. Farewell, my love. Farewell, family.
The Lion Cloud began its descent.
The Rage Domain Emperor moved.
He gathered the Revenge Domain Emperor from the water. Both arms, lifting — cradling what was broken against his chest. The blood sea around him surged inward, wrapping the Revenge Domain Emperor in red, shielding him, while the Rage Domain Emperor’s other hand tore at the spatial fabric — opening a crack into broken void space, a path out, a place where someone who was still alive might drift until they could be found—
He didn’t know if the Revenge Domain Emperor would survive broken void space in this condition. He didn’t know.
He wanted to do something. For this person who had hated him for his entire existence. This last person who shared blood with him.
“I was wrong before. I know that. Live — that’s all, just live, just live — living is all that matters—”
The Rage Domain Emperor, who had never apologized to anyone for anything in the entirety of his very long life, bowed his head.
“How touching,” the Golden Crown King said, his right arm transforming into a golden sacred blade.
It went through the Rage Domain Emperor’s back and out his chest. The fingers at the end of it pushed the remaining distance through — finding the Revenge Domain Emperor beyond, reaching his heart despite everything in the way.
The Lion King opened his mouth. The Lion Wind Jet that came out hit the spatial rift the Rage Domain Emperor had torn, collapsed it, sealed it — the last exit gone, the last possibility closed.
The Rage Domain Emperor screamed.
Not a battle cry. Something else. Something that came from a place below tactics or strategy or pride.
A blood-red image erupted above his head — the Rage God, massive and wrong, its face twisted into an expression that had no name for it. It punched through the Lion Cloud from beneath, opening a hole in the thing that had been about to swallow everyone. Blood light poured from the Rage God’s seven facial orifices, the force of it resonating through the Storm Sea and into every person present, landing on every heart like a hand pressing inward — not injuring, just making every single person there feel exactly what the Rage Domain Emperor was feeling at that moment.
His grief. His rage.
His complete despair.
He turned.
His bare hand found the Golden Crown King’s right arm — the one that had become a blade, the one still buried through both of them — and he severed it at the shoulder.
Blood scattered across the surface.
The Rage Domain Emperor’s howl rose through the Storm Sea and kept going, filling the space above it, filling everything — and the sea itself responded, the water rising, the surface fracturing, everything he was becoming everything around him, the fury finally consuming the distinction between self and world, the Storm Sea transforming into the blood of rage, a simultaneous eruption in every direction, consuming without discrimination, friend and enemy and sea and sky—
