There was no good news. It was all bad news.
It really was a plate fracture this time. The rift began at Qinhuangdao on the Bohai coast and ran all the way to Beijing. From Beijing it swung southwest and followed the western foot of the Taihang range. It passed right by them here at Taiyuan and kept running south, with no end in sight.
Apart from this plate-fracture zone splitting China in two, no other plate fractures had appeared anywhere.
Still, smaller fissures had opened in many places. There were volcanic eruptions and other natural disasters, and earthquakes had hit everywhere. The two earlier quakes had reshaped the land; this one reshaped it even more. According to the Mushroom City's report, the whole Mount Tai area had collapsed, with damage over a wide area.
No one would ever again climb Mount Tai and find the world below it small.
Most of the old Eastern Theater Command's settlements had suffered casualties. By a conservative estimate, more than three hundred people had fallen into fissures and were never heard from again.
And that wasn't even the hardest-hit area. The hardest-hit area was the Beijing theater.
The rift cut straight through Beijing's Shunyi District, and the little Xiji Town oasis was battered for a long time by quakes above magnitude ten. More than seven hundred people died, a crippling blow. Still, since everyone in the new government was now an evolved person, their resistance to disaster was very strong.
The real disaster fell on the ordinary people who had just been moved in and hadn't yet been given the Spilled Water Serum.
Facing such terrifying quakes, they suffered heavy casualties. The ordinary people stranded in the Baoding theater were hit hardest: more than two thousand three hundred of them died.
Not one in a hundred humans had survived to begin with. With another blow like this, there would hardly be anyone left.
So on the Super-Thunder Wave, everyone's voice was heavy.
The land was scarred wherever you looked.
However much humans cursed the heavens, all they could do was stubbornly keep surviving.
