"Don't you people think this is too much?"
Mun-jong Lee made no attempt to hide his displeasure with the investigator who had come down to meet him in the prosecutors' office parking garage.
"What are you questioning me for?!"
"There's been testimony. And we have an obligation to investigate."
"Come on. So if some old man walking by curses my name, you'll question me over that too? Where in the world is there a law like that?"
"That is the law. And the person who testified isn't an old man walking by."
The investigator kept the smile on his face as he spoke.
"But I'd ask you to understand that we've done what we could to show you every courtesy, Vice-Chairman."
"Courtesy? What courtesy? Is this courtesy?"
"If we weren't showing you courtesy, we'd have met you upstairs."
The investigator was making the point that meeting him down in the parking garage was the courtesy.
"Ahem."
Mun-jong Lee understood what that meant, and stopped arguing.
Because if he had been seen walking into the prosecutors' office at street level, the reporters would certainly have had a photograph of it.
"If you're not questioning me down here, let's go in."
"Yes. I'll show you inside."
The investigator led the way in, and Mun-jong Lee followed him to the Special Investigation Division inside the prosecutors' office.
Mun-jong Lee went up after the investigator and headed straight for an interview room.
"What's this? Aren't we going to the District Chief's office?"
Whenever Mun-jong Lee arrived at a prosecutors' office, the District Chief's office was the first place he went.
He had naturally assumed he would be received by the District Chief and the Deputy District Chief and sit down to talk. Coming straight to an interview room began to strike him as wrong.
"Go on in. The Deputy Chief Prosecutor said he'd start right away."
"Deputy Chief Prosecutor? Seong-ho's friend?"
Mun-jong Lee looked at the open door with irritation on his face.
Then he went in, and Dae-su Park greeted him warmly.
"Vice-Chairman. It's been a while."
